it’s that time of year again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the US OPEN IS BACK!! woo hoo. pretty much the best time of the summer in NYC, tennis everywhere! and today was round 1. despite a 2 hour rain delay, i’ve been following the action (of course), and well, right now..just got home and about to relax to some men’s first round action: Federer versus Donald Young………hahaha
yeah….Donald Young. this freakin kid.
if you’re unfamiliar with Donald Young, USA tennis has been pushing this guy since 2001, ever since he was a junior and he was messing up the kiddies. but since he’s turned pro in 2004….he’s done absolutely nothing. so why the big deal? because…he was supposed to be “the future”. everything about him was marketable. he was hip. he was cool. he wears his hat to the side. heck…he’s being interviewed right now and he’s wearing BEATS by DRE headphones.

this kid is the ULTIMATE result of Agassi’s influence in the late 80s, early 90s…WITHOUT the substance.
i know….i sound harsh as hell…but come on man…he’s STILL sponsored by Nike…even after more accomplished americans (like James Blake for example) have done more (recently Blake has been dropped by Nike).
this year alone, Donald Young was in the midst of a 17 match LOSING streak…and barely did anything at any tournament. he still has NO titles and has NEVER been in the top 50.
i know it sounds like i hate this kid, but..man everything about him just SCREAMS all the problems with USA men’s tennis. i know i know..i should blame agassi…but damnit…he ended up winning 8 grand slams! i feel like the American men just cannot stand with the rest of the world in tennis. sure there’s Isner (who has no idea how to break serve) or even Fish (who…i like…but won’t do anything special). there was James Blake, who was pretty decent and who i will forever respect because of that crazy Agassi match….and lets not forget Roddick….who will NEVER win another grand slam unless a crap load of stars retire and break their ankles.
yeah…that’s the American men for you….who have no gone more than 10 years WITHOUT a grand slam singles title.
and then there’s Donald Young….look….i like the flash…but man……….he needs to fire all his coaches..hire Brad Gilbert..and get serious. he’s against the greatest of all time tonight and he’s about to get jacked up!
but..if he’s got anything going for him….he did have his best result at the Open last year. let’s see what happens.
